Mining open secrets: Analyzing popular astronomy themed music

It’s astonishing that some songs can stay in our minds for decades. Some can even compel us to play them billions of times around the world.

But how did the songwriters achieve this?

Intriguingly, many of the most popular songs are astronomy themed. From ‘Starry Starry Night’ to ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. From ‘Yellow’ to ‘Life on Mars’.

I’m curious. What are their secrets in capturing our attention? Are there concepts or tricks I can incorporate in my stargazing tours.

After going through 100+ songs, here are some themes I’ve found:

  • Stars as a bridge between lovers at different time and space.

  • Connecting stars to love.

  • Ambiguity with multiple interpretations.

  • Stars as a symbol for perfection or heaven.

  • Stars as a guide.

  • Stars symbolizing eternity.

  • Stars as a reminder, that helps us remember forever.

  • Stars representing endless possibilities.

  • Stars giving us a bigger, higher perspective.

  • Stars as a healer of our soul.

  • Under the stars as the ideal romantic night.

  • Stars inspiring songs of love.

  • Stars aligned as a metaphor for destiny or miracle.

  • Making a wish. Hopes and dreams.

  • Stars making us think about our existence.

  • A meditative, altered state of consciousness.

  • Stardust. We’re made of stars.

  • Stars falling, like falling in love.

  • Lighting up the darkness.

  • Immersing in the infinite. Floating in space. Swimming in the stars.

  • Stars as a blessing. Lucky stars.
